Thursday, July 21st, 2005

Today marks the beginning of IFBIN, a new code distribution service that provides high quality, well commented Flash & Flex sourcecode to your desktop. Download the sourcecode for learning and/or re-use. It’s a subscription based program that cost’s a only $350 a year to gain complete un-restricted access to a plethora of different examples that solve real world problems and are written by the top people in the Flash world.

Im very excited about the future of this service and glad to be apart of it. Ted Patrick the founder is nothing less than a machine and im sure that he will make it a success for everybody involved and primarily for the customers.

You can download the Windows 2000/XP Beta of the service from the company website right now, a Mac version is imminent.

Communicating between Actionscript and JSFL

Tuesday, July 19th, 2005

When creating Commands or Timeline Effects using the extensibility layer, it is sometimes necessary to provide some kind of user interface to allow the user to customise the functionality. JSFL has a little friend who’s sole purpose is to provide an easy markup language for describing Dialog Boxes. His name is XML2UI.

Kick Ass Flash Video Players

These video players come highly recommended, they look sweet and have plenty of features, and not only are they easy to customize, they also come with the source code so you can learn how they have been made.

First Video Player | Second Video Player | Third Video Player

On Windows if you double-click on a video file it will open in whatever video player you have installed. However, most common video players dont support Flash Video format (FLV's). So, double clicking on a Flash Video file generally does nothing.

Wouldn't it be great if when you try to open a Flash Video it opens up in a Video Player so you can watch it?

Well, now you can. Ive created a little tool that solves the problem and im giving it away to anybody and everybody.

[update] Ive stopped giving away this application now, i released it over 2.5 years ago, and since then Windows Vista was released, plus a new FLV format and so on. I do not have the time to keep adding new features or fixing bugs. You can however download the new Adobe Media Player from here. This will play FLV files from your local machine. [/update]

Effective Flash Navigation

Thursday, July 14th, 2005

Ive had numerous emails asking for me to post the slides and files from my presentation at FlashForward 2005, New York. So, they can now be downloaded from here.

Inside you will find a flash movie called 'presentation.swf', run it and you can see the slides. There is also a folder containing the source code for the example i showed which integrated the Browser History, Bookmarks and Permalinks with Flash. You can view it online here. It uses PHP, LocalConnection and HTML Framesets. You can quite easily replace the php code with asp, coldfusion, perl or whatever.

FlashForward 2005 Piccies

Monday, July 11th, 2005

Another Flash Conference has come to an end, FlashForward 2005 New York was a blast! Great people, great city, great parties and inspiration what more do you need? Great weather of course and we had that too.

Unfortuneatley im back in the UK now (got back earlier today), but i had a wonderful time and my presentation went really well despite the lack of sleep and me finding out about the London bombings five minutes before i was due to speak.

I took a whole bunch of piccies and they are online now for all to see.

Thanks Lynda, Stewart, Kim, Christophe and Carolin for putting on a great show and looking after us all.

Time for me to sleep, im shattered.
