Introducing the FLfile API

Thursday, July 29th, 2004

The latest update to Macromedia Flash MX 2004; Version 7.2 (Ellipsis) adds new file I/O capabilities to the JavaScript API (JSAPI). The shared library installed with the Flash MX 2004 7.2 Updater exposes a new FLfile object to JavaScript Flash (JSFL). This object contains 14 new functions that enable Flash developers to write Flash extensions that can access, modify, and remove files and folders on the local file system.

I was asked by Macromedia to write the documentation for the File API. You can view the reference in the form of an article, online here. (BTW: Checkout my piccie - *lol*)

Im jumping on the bandwagon late, i know. But for those of you that dont know (not many of you i would imagine), Macromedia released an updater for Flash MX 2004 on Monday codenamed Ellipsis, bring Flash up to version 7.2. This update aims to solve outstanding issues in three main areas:

  • Documentation
  • Performance & Resource Usage
  • Components

The Flash Team have fixed over 120 bugs and made numerous additions to the application. A complete list of the resolved issues and addtions can be found in the release notes.

Download the updater here.

I must mention that i recommend anybody using Flash MX 2004 7.1 should update a.s.a.p, compilation speeds have improved alot and some of the niggly bugs that we have been living with have also been fixed.

Website Downtime

Thursday, July 29th, 2004

You may have noticed recently that my site has been down for five days, ive had no email and my mailing list etc… has also be down. It appears that Duramedia’s data center decided they needed to do some upgrading to the servers and didnt notify anybody. I was completley oblivious and so where Josh and Danny whose sites were also offline. DNS *should* have propogated now. I will be moving servers in the next couple of weeks, at which point this problem wont happen again. Sorry.
