Flash Font Browser

Thursday, July 31st, 2003

The best implementation of the TextField.getFontList() method i have seen up to now. A nifty little RIA which allows you to preview the fonts on your system over the web, with different sized text, special characters etc….

Thanks Jarle

Number - String Representation

Thursday, July 31st, 2003

I have a flash movie which needs to display an integer as its string representation (e.g. 103 would be “one hundred and three”). So i thought i would set out on a mission to create a method which does just this. But, after a quick look at [Proto] i found a function already written that does just that! So heres the link which will take you directly to the code. Thought this would be of use to some Flash Developers.

Thursday, July 31st, 2003

Devnet Resource Kit 4

Wednesday, July 30th, 2003

Macromedia have recently released DRK 4 to the people who haven’t forked out lots of cash for the Devnet Subscriptions. Macromedia usually send me a copy of the DRK’s but i didnt recieve this one. The new Flash Charting Component Set 2 looks like the only thing which is of any great interest to potential buyers in the Flash Community. There are a few Flash based RIA examples on the cd which you can take apart and study to your hearts content, which may also tickle your fancy, but for me, im not overly excited about this disc!

Help? ActionsPanel & Docs

Thursday, July 17th, 2003

I have just installed Macromedia Studio MX on my laptop with a trial version of Macromedia Flash Communication Server MX, and the Actions Panel hasnt been updated with the new FlashComm Server Objects and methods, but the help files have been installed for FlashComm. So my question, can somebody please share, or send me the CustomActions xml file for the FlashComm Server Objects & Methods, i believe there may be two xml files, but im not sure, one for the Actions Panel and one for the Reference Panel. Thankyou kindly. Re-Installing FlashComm doesnt fix the problem, nor does re-installing Studio MX.

Macromedia FlashPaper

Thursday, July 17th, 2003

Macromedia today announced the launch of a new product that aims to push the Flash Player in the direction that adobe’s printable document format has been going. The idea is simple, convert any document into an swf which can then be placed within a website for all to see and all your website viewers require is the Flash Player. So the FlashPaper tool also has a swanky GUI for viewing the documents online, much like a slim version of Acrobat Reader. More information here.

Flash Robots - BrawlBots

Monday, July 14th, 2003

Branden Hall showed his latest pet project to the crowds at FlashForward NYC. His latest project BrawlBots is a system that enables developers to create battle ready robots in actionscript and compete against other developers virtual robots in a virtual arena, online. If you ever played the world-wide phenomenon Pokemon cards, then this is a similar kind of thing but a cyberspace version. So for example i could build a robot by creating a class which extends the BrawlBot API, which when fired upon will turn around and face the robot which fired the shot and keep blasting it to pieces until all the enemy robots armour is gone. the possibilites are endless! A wicked idea and something which i think alot of people should have a play with. Presently Branden is asking for developers to beta test the system, so if your interested send an email to brawlbots-beta-subscribe@waxpraxis.org.
