There are so many Flash related blogs now, its becoming hard to decide which ones to visit on a daily basis, and which ones to check every couple of days. Quasimondo is yet another added to the lineup. It seems this site is more of a personal project archive as opposed to a Flash news portal, but worth checking out for some interesting viewing now and again.

Shockwave Rips FlashGuru
Thursday, June 13th, 2002Last week i checked my weblogs as i usually do on a daily basis, to see alot of requests for images coming from www.shockwave.net, i decided to jump over to www.shockwave.net to see if they had linked me up, but to my suprise, they had actually clean and blatently stolen my ‘Flash Blogs’ and ‘Flash Resources’ panels from the right-hand side of this page and every other page. I checked my logs the next day to find that there were no more request from this url, so i checked back again to find that they had now copied over all the images from my server and changed the html code so that all the images are loaded from their server instead of mine. The images are named the same, they are the same colours, same style and the links are in the same order that they were on my pages on the date of the theft. Excuse my language but that pisses me off, bigstyle! Checkout www.shockwave.net and scroll half way down the page to the ‘Flash Blogs & Resources’ section to see the rip.
Flash Math Playgrounds
Thursday, June 13th, 2002Nowadays it is becoming standard practice for flash developers to show off their experiments in the form of an experimental playground on the web. Unfortuneatley out of the thousands of playgrounds that exist on the www, only a handful stand out from the crowd and recieve worldwide acclaim, for example Praystation, Flight404 and Wireframe. These sites pushed the envelope with original and inspiring experiments. Suprisingly in the past week, i have recieved lots of links to sites that want a plug in my news, but only two of them caught my eye, Eric Lin’s Flash Math Experiments was the first, complete with lots of complex actionscript experiments, including such things as 3d, mazes, skewing, masks, rubiks cube, games & physics. All of which have associated tutorials and downloadable files. Ximensions was the second site, a site that archives Flash Math experiments that deal with the subject of applying physics in actionscript, containing alot of interesting particle effects, and actionscripted motion.
getURL(”javascript:”) Protocol Exploit
Tuesday, June 11th, 2002Some community forums and websites, allow their users to upload .swf files and store/execute them on their own server. Malicious flash users can access the contents of the cookies associated with the site on which the .swf resides, using the getURL(”javascript:”) protocol. There will always be people who use the power of such technologies as flash for malicious causes, lets hope this doesnt add yet more restrictions to the flash mx security sandbox. I think its more of a concern for the developers of applications that allow you to upload content onto their very own servers. Read all about this exploit by following this link. Show Streaming Bug
Monday, June 10th, 2002Since Macromedia Flash 5, it has been possible to view your flash movie stream into the player, at different bit-rates, using the Show Streaming Option in the Flash Authoring Player, found in the View menu. This makes it possible to see what your website viewers will see when they visit your website on their varying sized bandwidth pipes, 14k, 28k, 56k etc….. obviously it isnt exactly accurate, because your website viewers connection speeds will fluctuate, but it will give you a good idea. In Flash MX, you can now export your flash movies compressed, using GZLib compression, which further reduces the filesize of .swf files which contain lots of text and actionscript. Unfortuneatley the Show Streaming option doesnt cater for this further filesize reduction, therefore it is now even less accurate!

Flash MX + IE6 + Scroll Wheel
Monday, June 10th, 2002Alot of mouses now available on the market have a scroll wheel, mine included, the Microsoft Intellimouse, unfortuneatley there is no support for the scroll wheel in Flash MX, but with the use of a little javascript you can inform your flash movies, when the scroll wheel is being used, once your flash movie has been alerted that the scroll wheel has been used, much like an event, you can then do whatever you like with that nofitication, scroll a textfield, move a movieclip or turn the volume of your background music up & down. Chanm7 webmaster of The 1st Movement and a Were-Here member, reveals all on the Were-Here forums, complete with an example and downloadable source. You can also see a live example of this technique in action, scrolling multiple textfields at this flash blog reader also courtesy of The 1st Movement.
